Vasco da Gama Pillar

Where history meets the Indian Ocean.

One of the oldest European monuments in East Africa, standing on a headland overlooking Malindi's shoreline.

The pillar was erected in 1498 by the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama during his voyage to India, with the agreement of the Sultan of Malindi.

Today it is a landmark of Malindi's long history as a trading town on the Indian Ocean, with wide views across the bay.
